"If I didn't have professional mountain guides and EMTs with the back country group that day, I may not be standing in front of you," says Professional Skier, JT Holmes. Holmes, known for his extreme ski-BASE jumping and speed skiing, was doing some recreational snow cat skiing on January 14, 2016, between Timber Knob and Donner Lake, when an avalanche buried him under three feet of snow. "I remember the whole experience of being buried in an avalanche vividly except for the 4 minutes or so that I was unconscious," says Holmes. Holmes says the lesson he would take away from the experience is to have a great team. He also says it is important to never be complacent. "You don't have to have a big objective to be in a considerable amount of danger," says Holmes. Holmes and his team of 8 experienced back country skiers, had actually known there was some avalanche danger that day. They had tested the snow and practiced with their beacons, but decided the risk was not severe enough to cancel the adventure. He says all skiers, even those not planning to go into the back country, should pay attention to the snow pack, the weather, the temperature and other conditions where you are going to be skiing during the season. He checks websites and avalanche conditions just to be aware of the mountain. "On the simpler side of back country skiing, you need to have a beacon, which you know how to use, a shovel and a probe with you at all times and they need to be accessible," says Holmes. "They need to be quick on the draw because when it matters, it really matters. Seconds count. It can be the difference between zero injury and brain injury, or alive and dead." In this ski area, sierraavalanchecenter.org is an excellent resource for avalanche conditions, classes and weather. JT Holmes has been featured on CBS 60 minutes for his terrifying ski-BASE jumping descent down the Eiger, a mountain in the Swiss Alps, twice. Apart from his professional skiing, Holmes does a lot of stunt jumping for films, such as Transformer 3. Holmes is the Director of B.A.S.I.C.S., a program service of High Fives Foundations designed to promote safety and awareness through world-class fundamentals coaching. In 2002, he was awarded The Certificate of Heroism from the Governor of Alaska for saving the life and an avalanche victim. Raised in Palo Alto, California, Holmes attended the University of Nevada, Reno.
